“Having strong wheelchair skills is critical to independence, safety and community participation for individuals with a spinal cord injury. Unfortunately, there often isn’t enough time during rehab to focus on more than the basic skills.  Investigators at the University of Pittsburgh are conducting a fully online research study to determine the effectiveness of virtual peer coaching in manual wheelchair skills for individuals with SCI living in a community setting.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are at least 18 years of age or older
  • Have a non-progressive SCI
  • Can speak and read English
  • Reside in the community
  • Independently use a manual wheelchair for at least 50% of their mobility
  • Have access to an internet-ready device (smartphone, tablet or computer) with video capability
  • Have someone available to act as a spotter while practicing skills
  • Are interested in learning at least 5 of the 16 skills included in the training program.

Participants will complete questionnaires, receive one-on-one peer coaching, practice wheelchair skills, and review training videos from the comfort of their own home. Participation is completely voluntary.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating or learning more, please visit  https://tinyurl.com/mwcpeercoaching or contact the study coordinator at 412-232-9326 or tempestml@upmc.edu.

Your support in sharing this information with your personal and professional networks will contribute to advancing training strategies that promote greater mobility and independence among manual wheelchair users.”
